I'd say Washington DC is your top destination At around 55 mph, 4 hours will take you about 220-250 miles. 6 hours will take you around 330-350 miles. I won’t do this precisely; but, here are a number of cities you can visit within these time/distance bands.4 hours: Knoxville, TN Charleston, WV Roanoke, VA Charleston, SC Savannah, GA Atlanta, GA 6 hours: Washington, DC Richmond, VA Jacksonville, FL Birmingham, AL Nashville, TN I am not doing this scientifically, since you could be driving at 65mph speeds for parts of your journey.

You are ruling out some of the most beautiful beaches and mountains in this nation of ours. But, that is ok. You still have a tremendous number of destinations which would let you and your family actually touch the history of our nation.

You also have access to some wonderful golf (Amelia Island in SC) and fishing (lake fishing in GA) destinations. Since I don't know what you like, I am going to stick to historical themes. If you want to keep your travel within the 4 hour-sh range, I favor Charleston, SC or Atlanta, GA.

Both have a tremendous amount of history to share. Atlanta is also a major city, giving it access to the arts. It also has other tourism venues, e.g. , the World of Coca Cola, the Martin Luther King Jr. National etc. Personally, I prefer Charleston, SC.

But, you know what you and your family like to do. Within the 6 hour band, I strongly recommend Washington DC. The museums there alone can occupy you for weeks.

Perhaps the National Air & Space Museum is what you are interested in. If not, this link shows you the numerous Smithsonian museums: http://www.si.edu/Museums/. If your interests go in another direction, then consider Washington's International Spy Museum.

But, it becomes far more meaningful to touch and feel the seat of our government--the White House, the Capitol building, the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, the Jefferson Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the US Holocaust Memorial Museum, etc.You can also visit Mount Vernon, home to George Washington, and Monticello, home to Thomas Jefferson (on your way to or from DC). I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
