3rd catalytic converter in 7 weeks, 2nd time muffler the cause, what could be the problem?

The muffler is downstream from the cat, so it's hard to know how the muffler could be the cause of a catalytic converter problem. Is the whole system just rattling itself to death? Or is there a backup?

I'd be more curious about why the muffler is getting blocked. A blocked muffler will cause all sorts of problems. It will destroy the catalytic converter, and also make the engine work too hard as it has to squeeze exhaust out past the blockage.

If it's completely blocked the car can't start. The question is what it's blocked with, and what direction that blockage is coming from. If it's just old, replace it.

That's something they should have done the first time.

Go find a different mechanic. The muffler is unlikely to affect the cat. More likely the engine is running too rich or one spark plug is not firing and that's burning up the cat.
