A "clean slate" for all? What do you think? Pros and cons?

I'll put what I posted in the Moderator's DB as #1. Feedback? Is this a lousy idea, or maybe a good one to deal with the mess that "enforcement" has become?

Any other suggestions? Asked by ~wb 38 months ago Similar questions: clean slate Pros cons Amazon > Askville.

I'm with you. Give everyone a clean slate. For too long, Askville was like the Wild West in that there were no rules--at least none that were enforced.

Then--very slowly--rules were actually enforced. As with all crackdowns, people were penalized for doing things that were long tolerated under the previous way of doing things. So we had seventeen people suspended for doing what they and others had been doing for a long while.

Since the suspensions, community guidelines have been pronounced. There are less than perfectly clear. Strikes and warnings have been issued based upon the sole, unchallengeable discretion of one person, based purely upon that person's subjective reading of the context, without any opportunity to participate and present the accused's side of the story.

This procedure is neither fair nor does it comply with recognized standards of due process of law. The only saving grace to this procedure is that is quite easy to understand. Since until several days ago it was quite unclear as to how much political correctness Askville was going to require of its inmates, the fair and just thing would be to give everyone a "mulligan" and let everyone start afresh.

Now that we understand the rules, everyone should have a chance to start playing on the same, level playing field. Considering that Askville's failure to enforce its own rules was a major contributing cause to the current mess, Askville really ought to give everyone an equal chance to participating under the new rules, unburdened by their past actions and Askville's past inactions. In the words of Portia in "The Merchant of Venice," Act IV, Scene1, taken from http://maryourmother.net/Shakespeare.html The quality of mercy is not strained. It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven Upon the place beneath.

It is twice blest: It blesseth him that gives and him that takes. Tis mightiest in the mightiest; it becomes The throned monarch better than his crown. S scepter shows the force of temporal power, The attribute to awe and majesty, Wherein doth sit the dread and fear of kings.

But mercy is above this sceptered sway; It is enthroned in the hearts of kings; It is an attribute of God himself; And earthly power doth then show like God's When mercy seasons justice. LOL) be given. Basically, what was said above about Goldie, it seems like backpeddling and by saying it's "challenging" you're saying "maybe it wasn't warranted", then just say THAT. Take away those lingering strikes and just call it EVEN.

If answers can't be given, actions supported, etc. , then wipe the slate clean. Maybe, as someone suggested yesterday (Cat, maybe? ) let's just all have a clean slate (including the unbanning of avvoo) starting on "said day" and then start the rules/guidelines enforcement on an even ground from that day forward.

And with consistency. You've already stated that you're not looking back at records as of # day, and there's confusion on reports after that day even. Flopping around in the mess that has resulted since the suspensions and then subsequent strike-this, warning-that, ban-here, bundle-there is just making everyone more frustrated.

In a clean slate scenario, if people that HAVE strikes and are deserving of them get wiped clean, too, then so be it.

2 Well, as I only have to say "it's a lime," for 26 more days and I don't plan to get in any trouble before then (:-D), I think it's a bit of a moot point for me personally. I don't think it is reasonable to expect that anyone will be "unbanned," however, because if the AVPTB do that, they would have to explain why they're not unbanning everyone who ever got banned and that would be opening up a can of worms no one wants opened. I think the team already has us going down this path and it would be too hard and/or confusing to try to change direction now.

Just my 2 cents.

3 I'm just wondering if we'll ever get past the questions from the suspensions and the strikes here recently. It doesn't seem like the AVPTB can give answers that anyone is happy with, so I thought MAYBE this idea may help to a degree. Though the sting of the suspensions will always linger, I'm sure, if there could be some statement that "It was/is a mess, let's start over!" >, maybe the community could move forward.

You're right, Hank, about the unbanning, that could be difficult to accomplish.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
