A "smell" question. Cold air return, crawl space underneath, right by the computer desk, it constantly smells musty.? Half of my house is basement, other half crawl space. I've noticed when the A/C is off (the past month) that the vent by the computer desk (at the point basement meets crawlspace) has a cool, musty smell creeping up.
It is lined with plastic. I don't store anything under there (learned my lesson the hard way). I imagine when I turn the furnace on in the next week or so, it won't be so noticeable, but meanwhile, it's annoying.
Should I just put an air freshener solid by it since it's a minor annoyance, or is there something I can do, or SHOULD do, to make this go away? I've never noticed this too much in the past, but then before ASKVILLE I didn't spend as much time on the computer as I do now, close to the smelly area. : ) Asked by ~wb 38 months ago Similar questions: smell question Cold air return crawl space underneath computer desk constantly smells musty Home > Home Improvement.

Damp Musty smell equals sign of dampness to me, even former dampness. You mentioned a crawl space, so I figure that's under your house. You must have a pier foundation, or what some people would call a conventional foundation as opposed to a concrete slab foundation.
I would definitely have that investigated by a reputable, trustworthy person and then have the problem corrected. If there's dampness under your house, your house is an excellent candidate for developing mold which will likely lead to respiratory or other health problems in the inhabitants. Check it out..
1 Sounds like damo and mold problem.....Get someone under there with flashlights to detect where it is at.....Air freshner may cover the mildew smell, but will not correct it..nor stop it from growing larger!Blessings.......Annlee .

2 I agree with Annlee. It's likely mold and you want that gone not covered up.

I run a fan in the basement 24/7 to keep air circulated, but of course little air circulates in the crawl space area. There are vents though.
4 Fans can be installed in crawl spaces to vent better....I have one...but first try and find the source...it will be blackesh gray and look like moss on a tree.Blessings......Annlee .

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
