After 70 years, why do we still call the attack on Pearl Harbor a sneak attack?

Had similar thoughts yesterday when I heard a news reporter frame it as a sneak attack. Common sense tells us that war is all about covert activity. People often pretend to come for tea in their personal lives when their intent is actually clandestine.

One has to ask why anyone would deceive themselves about what happens in war time.

Actually if you follow the historical timeline of the events, the Japanese and American diplomats were in the middle of peace talks at the time. Japan had intimated that they were not looking to take any American territories, unlike what they had already done with the western Pacific rim and parts of China. Unfortunately, we did not know they were as close as they were due to the cut backs in the National Defense budget.

The Japanese Ambassador in Washington was suppose to hand the Declaration of War to our Secretary of Defense, 30 min. Prior to the attack. There was a problem with the decoding of the order from Japan to the Japanese Ambassador which set the time of declaring war on us not until after the attack already happened.

That is why it has been looked down upon, because war had not been declared by either side, and the Japanese had been actually talking peace rather than what took months of planning.

Because it was a sneakie thing to do! Why do we after 70 yeasr call what tler did to the jews a mass genicide?

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
