I start student teaching next semester for infants/toddlers and preschoolers. In the fall of 2011 I will be student teaching Kindergarten and one of the primary grades (1st, 2nd or 3rd). Are there any recommendations that any of you guys have for student teachers or beginning teachers?

I'm really nervous. I'm sure I'll get along with all the kids, but I'm still pretty apprehensive.Do you have any advice on anything dealing with the children, grading, lessons, school, colleagues, parents etc.? Just go in well prepared. Have lesson plans and objectives thought out, then realize that things are going to arise to interupt that; so be prepared to be flexible. Be loving but assertive.

Your goal is to be respected, so don't try to be everyone's best friend; relax and be yourself. Confidence in your knowledge and ability shows; fear and weakness show too and it's like blood in the water. Use your cooperating teacher, principal, and other staff as resources.

They'll respect you more for asking them than for acting like you all ready know it all. You've spent a lot of time preparing, you can do it! Finding a job in that field right out of the blocks can be rough too, consider special education endorsements or a minor in Math or Science to get your foot in the door in a school district.

You're their teacher---not their friend. Do not let the boundaries get blurred. The best advice I ever received was to make sure the kids know that you like and respect them---even if they're wrong or their behavior is unacceptable.Be prepared for students who will not listen, behave, or try.

That's the bane of our existence as teachers. And, although the majority of your day will be spent in dealing with disruptions and maintaining order, enjoy every student you have by allowing them their dignity and creativity. Smile a lot and laugh!

Good luck! (And I agree with Supt. ---have lesson plans that allow for every contingency and develop a yearly plan so that you know what you'll be teaching two months and even a year ahead.

) .

Have as little to do with the principal or the vice principal or the administrative office as possible. Deal with behavior problems yourself; this means make the kids happy so that they don't become noticed by the principal. When the principal does come by to evaluate, always be ready with your lesson plans on hand .. Only, don't be insisting on completing them each day.

Pleasing the students: many of them merely want someone to listen to them.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
