There are 2 resources I can point you to. The first is a book called "Mastering Windows SharePoint Services 3.0" by C.A. Callahan. It's a pretty big book but goes in depth into the web parts and functionality of SharePoint WSS 3.0 - which is where 90% of your development will be.
Callahan is a trainer by trade and does a great job of easily explaining things as well as showing you some tricks that she's learned along the way that really stretch SP beyond the normal while still sticking to an "out of the box" installation. Great book. The second is a web site (heathersolomon.com) Heather is THE recognized expert when it comes to chroming and branding your site.
Her website is full of great advice and examples of how to modify site definitions, CSS etc to make your site look the way you want it to, using the colors that you want. Build your site first (using the Mastering book to guide you) and then hit Heather's site when you are ready to take on the look and feel part of site development.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
