As for installing it get a real electrician to set it up for ya.
It's my understanding that a home generator either plugs directly into your home energy circuit, or you run extension cords. Except for running extension cords, you'll need an electrician and several hundred, if not thousands, of dollars.
First decision is whether you are going to have a permanently mounted generator; or a portable generator. If you have natural gas or propane already; and don't expect to use your generator for other things, a permanently mounted generator is great; especially if you are willing to pay the extra for an automatic transfer system. The next question is whether you want full house backup capability; or selected circuit capability.
Full house is especially good if you use natural gas or propane for heating and cooking; as those are the applications that have the highest electrical demand. The cheap and simple option is a transfer panel that connects directly into your main electrical panel and allows you to manually transfer selected circuits to generator power: the equipment will cost around $500.00 if the panel is in the garage; and you can wheel the generator outside and close the door on the cord. Otherwise; you can use the same equipment and have an electrician set you up with an inlet box where the generator will be for a little extra money. As for essential appliances, that is a judgement call on your part.
In my house; I have the bedrooms, the office, the refrigerator and freezer, and the TV on the generator; and can switch power between the well and the water heater. I do not have the power capacity for the electric heat or the stove; and I do not have the switching space for the microwave. - but my primary heat is woodstoves, and I can heat food on those.
