A while back a read "Novelist's Boot Camp" by Todd Stone. It had a lot of practical advice and exercises for writing and improving one's writing.
I know this isn't exactly the answer you're looking for, but the best writers are usually the people that read the most. If you read the newspaper, blogs, or a lot of books, your writing will probably start to shape up quite well. Alternatively, try any of the Dummies books.
They're always a good read, and really helpful.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
