The Gaslight District can be awesome....if you are willing to drive to Coronado or Del Mar, you'll find more. Imperial and Pacific Beach have great tourist spots, so they have more choices. Keep an eye on this site and you will see what's up!
The irony...San Diego has many suburbs, so you have to check it out. I lived in Rancho Bernardo/Poway.....was military so had some benefits you may not. I would avoid Santee ( huge drive for you), TJ and Balboa unless you are bold.
I'm jealous.....my favorite hometown........enjoy!

Soma San Diego: Soma is one of the most legendary music venues in San Diego for punk and hardcore bands. It gives off the feel of an underground music venue in a warehouse-like setting. Along with the main stage there is also a side stage where there is often a band playing in between sets, so you won't be without music the entire show.
The Casbah: The Casbah continues to be one of the best San Diego music venues and has been hosting bands the likes of Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins and MGMT since 1989. Their original venue had a tiny maximum capacity of 75 people. In 1994 they moved to their current location where they can accommodate around 200 people.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
