Are community colleges a good place to get a marketable skill or should I be more selective in the college?

1) Community colleges are the best place to get your core classes - those that are transferable to a university; use the university for your upper division classes and electives. Community colleges generally cost less, have better student to teacher ratios, are actually taught by the professors rather that grad students and allow the transition from the structure of high school to the freedom of college more easily.

2) If you're interested in trades rather than jobs that require a 4 year degree, they are much better.

It depends...1. On the skill, and more importantly,2. On your target market.

If you are "working backwards from the answer"--which I recommend when doing career planning--find out more about your target market. In this case, whom do they hire? What types of degrees do they value?

What educational institutions do they recruit from? For example, if someone wanted to become a lawyer, it would be helpful to sit down and talk to a diversity of lawyers. What are the different legal careers one can have?

What are the different law practices and specialties? What law schools does one need to attend for different careers? What type of college and major are required to get into law school?

Does one have to work for several years after college before law school? Etc? Etc?

This will rapidly tell you whether community college is an alternative or not. Of course, substitute whatever you are interested in in place of law. Another example: I don't know how many people are interested in Goldman Sachs these days.

But, if a mega-million dollar Wall Street career is of interest at a top institution, a community college won't work, unless you are the son of a senior partner.

Many professional people go back to school and study law. However, more companies are preferring MBAs over lawyers. What do you think are the jobs that are in high demand for the next decade?

I don't have a crystal ball. Neither degree is a guarantee of continuous employment. That would be a good Q to pose to the AV Community at large.

They are excellent. We raised our kids in this little "snooty" town that brain washed them that unless you go to a out-of-state private classy college you are a loser. So they went.

We spent a little fortune on both of their education. For my daughter was worth it. She got a degree and went on to get two Masters (paid herself) and she has an awesome career.

Son, went because he had to. No such good student. Got A+ in social skills and partying.

Graduated in 4 years, hates his major and looking back, if we had been nore in tune we should have sent him to a local community college until he convinced us that he was college material. If not push him to get a trade to make sure he could one day support himself and a family.10 years since graduation. He had nice jobs and the last one downzsized because of the economy and he has been unemployed over one year.Is nothing out there.

A study done stated that people graduating from Ivy League colleges get higher salary in the beginning but eventually when experience is what matters all salaries level off. A community college prepares well a student, that has not been excellent, to finish at a 4 years college at a great savings.

He has a degree in International Business, two minors (Spanish and Portuguese) he is... GASP!..... a musician. A serious drummer that plays with many bands, works with a studio and teaches school kids preparing them for participating in the school bands. On the side he is working in construction, helping hubby with the projects here at home redoing a deck, a balcony and installing hardwood floors.

He is planning to go back to school and get a certificate in Audio Engineering and open a recording studio. He has been recording already and slowly he is buying the equipment but the income is limited. He is looking for a management job like he had before (he comes highly recommended) only to be able to save the funds he needs to do what he wants.Luckily....he is single and has no children.

When I taught at the prison, the top of the academic achievement was an A.A., which a number of the prisoners earned. Upon release (however many years later), they were able to walk into employment because they were already trained (having an A.A. in something useful, unlike yours truly who has a couple of degrees in something useless. ) None of those who had earned an A.A. returned to prison.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
