Are generic drugs different than brand name drugs? Can I use generic Gemfibrozil?

Generic drugs and brand name drugs are almost the exact same. The name of the drug and the price is different but everything else is the same. The original manufacturer of the drug invests a lot of time and money into researching and developing the drug.
