Why don't you help me pay another doctor by giving me my Medicair/are money back so I can make it to 65?" Where, pray tell, do you think the 'government' would get the money to "pay another doctor"? About 56% of government spending comes from taxes, and the remaining 46% comes from where .
. .? You guessed it: the government (which of course means US) borrows it! I determined eligibility for applicants for Food Stamps and Medicaid for 30 years in the State of ******* prior to retiring.
I can honestly say that the majority of the people receiving these benefits knew that they came from "the government", but had no idea how. I did not say this to disparage those people; it's just the way it was. Having said all of that: if the 'government' (both parties are guilty of this!) has used the Social Security trust fund to pay for things that were NEVER intended to be used for.
If (and this is a big "IF") they had let the money stay in trust fund, future generations might not have to worry so much. As it is, the only thing in the fund are 'IOU's. I had a friend in college who graduated with a degree in Social Work.
She was so far left of "liberal "that it wasn't even funny. However, she is now VERY conservative; she grew this way after working for a few years and seeing so many taxes being taken out of her pay check and given to people who could have worked! We HAVE TO BE TAXED!
Without taxes, there would be no paved highways, no police forces, no public education, transportation, or defense forces. They have to have money to exist. However, we waste (and I saw this in State government to a HUGH degree also!) so much money and given so much money to foreign governments and also to people in this country who CAN work but will NOT!
I've had clients tell me that "why should I go to work? My benefits will be cut off". The majority of people receiving public assistance are (in my opinion!) people who need help temporarily.
It is NO disgrace to do this! However, when work IS available and people will NOT accept jobs, then there is no excuse for this kind of behavior! Remember the 'good' economy we had during the middle to late 1990s?
Well, our State had the highest number of welfare (now TANF, but formerly AFDC) cases in a region of this country. Jobs were plentiful; we had 4 PAGES of the Food Stamp manual giving us instructions on how to EXEMPT people from having to register for work, and only 3 PARAGRAPHS mandating work registration. We need some common sense in this country.
Medicare taxes aren't earmarked for your benefit, nor do they go into any kind of account that is to be used for your medicare coverage (should you apply for it) after you reach 65. The taxes go to pay for current benefits to other people. And it won't do any good to stop being an employee and start your own business, as one poster suggested.
If you're a sole proprietor you'll be subject to the self-employment tax, which includes the medicare tax; if you operate through a corporation or other entity, your salary will be subject to the medicare tax.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
