Sony's PRS line of e-book readers features a slicker design, superfast processors, plenty of onboard memory, and dead-simple interfaces. Last year's Sony Reader Digital Book (PRS-700) has a 6-inch (diagonal), 800-by-600-pixel screen that lets you tap your way through its entire interface (including a virtual QWERTY keyboard) and turn pages with a swipe of the finger. The older Sony Portable Reader System (PRS-500) is the most affordable standalone reader we've tested ($250 street), but lacks the flash of the PRS-700's touch screen.

Neither Sony device, however, can download books over the air the way the Kindles can. If you're an iPhone or an iPod touch user, you actually already own an e-book reader—and a free one, at that.
