I do not like the idea of pinning questions - it makes your own question disappear and is not getting the full satisfaction of the vast range of answers you were hoping for. The idea which I would really like to happen, is that pinned answers get pinned to a sidebar whilst all the other answers continue as normal. This way, people will have their answers always pinned - announcements can be pinned on the sidebar as well and the large community can have their answers at least shown at the top for a reasonable amount of time.Cjd.
I agree with you Darcy. More than just taking up space, it sucks that legit questions are pushed off of the valuable front page quickly. I've started to withhold questions.
I figure I'll wait until there isn't much (or anything) pinned and then ask questions that aren't time sensitive so that I can get better answers. Since Mahalo admin's are the only ones with the power to pin questions, it's a "feature" that I'll have to live with I guess. Would the solution maybe involve your super Black Belt powers?
Do those super powers include the ability to suggest policy? Maybe you could write up a ruleset for pinned questions that was specific and easy to understand and have it evaluated by the Mahalo masters?
I agree. At the moment, almost half of the tipped slots are pinned. That means that each tipped question will get a shorter amount of time on the front page, but because of autotipping, time on the front page the main reason to add a tip.
I think that pinning questions will lead to a decrease in tipped questions, especially $1 tips. And just as Robbrown said about trying to time questions, I'm sure other people will try to wait too, meaning that even as pinned question come down, time on the front page will be shortened by many people trying to use that window. I think that only Mahalo-related questions/announcements should be pinned to the front for a day, and then only if they are important.Gh-tipped questions should be pinned for a shorter amount of time, maybe 4-6 hours maximum.
Even if they are not on the front page as long as a normal pin, questions with high tips will still get visibility, as they will be the first results when sorting by highest tip. I can see the usefulness of pinning certain questions, but with such a limited space on the front page, it gets irksome.
I think we've been using this feature too much as well. We have four questions up there and that's one or two too many in my mind. @Mike and I just discussed it and we're going to limit it to two questions.
We're working on a system where users can place a question in the top slot for 24 hours for M$100. There will be three *additional* slots like this at some point. This means there will still be the same number of questions on the page (20), but we'll be able to make up to $300 a day ($9k a month) from pinned questions.
That should solve a lot of the problem. Then folks who want to get up there can, but it has a real cost.
I agree with your three choices, they seem the most logical. Anything else is of lesser importance.
I don't think pinning is the problem. I think the main problem is not being able to customize one's main page by subject. Also, Twitter is driving stuff off the page within minutes. My recent questions have only had 10 - 20 views, how can I expect a useful answer?
They used to get 100 - 200.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
