Are we sacrificing our American traditions just to satisfy those whose culture is different than our own?

I remember a story that happened in New York city two years ago about a Muslim cab driver who refused a fare because his passenger was carrying alcoholic spirits that were against his religion, or wishing someone a happy holiday was more appropriate than saying merry Christmas. If people wish to live in this country, shouldn't they respect our culture and make allowances for the way we live rather than imposing their eruditions on us? This seems to be a common concern I can site many examples of this. It drives me crazy that so many people want to come and live in the US, but they can't seem to understand or accept when we celebrate our heritage and traditions. This country was founded on certain liberties, rights, and principles.

We shouldn't have to give them up to please any outsiders wanting to live here.

The short answer is "yes. " Every immigrant that came here during the beginning of the 20th century had to assimilate. Granted, it was their children that went to American schools, learned English, and the American way of life, often feeling estranged from their own parents and grandparents.

However, to function in this country you had to speak the language, dress appropriately, and adapt. This is the land of the free, and all nationalities and religions are welcome. As long as they are law abiding, they are free to live their lives the way they want.

But, something definitely has changed since the 60s when Cubans fled the Castro regime in droves to Florida and turned that state bi-lingual. I am not anti-immigrant, let me be clear, but in the past 50 years we have started to pander to the foreigner instead of the other way around. We complain about illegals but have allowed illegals to flourish by allowing Spanish to infiltrate our television, our phones, and signs in the airport, making it easy for the illegal not only to live here but never learn English.

I go to a supermarket in Midtown Manhattan whose employees are all They talk Spanish to each other all the time in front of English speaking customers, and it is I that feels like the foreigner. It is commendable that they speak English and Spanish, but in an English speaking market they should speak the language of the customers. It is incorrect for the management to allow this, and what makes me angry is that the employees don’t even see this as being rude or incorrect.

Many of them are born here and should respect the fact that this is an English speaking country. Sephora fired a number of employees who refused to speak English to one another in the store. As for your Muslim cab driver, he was wrong and should separate business from his personal beliefs.

I would have told him so, and if he had still refused to take me as a fare, I would have taken his number and reported him to the taxi company. That is why we should put the illegal on a path to citizenship which requires knowledge of our history, speaking the language, working, paying taxes, and as you mentioned to have respect for our culture.

YES We have begun to kowtow to every whim of every person who can conceive an idea, no matter how stupid it really is. I do not know if we really agree with them or have reached that place in time where we would rather just give in than fight. Satan has sent every devil in Hell to tempt, subvert, and destroy the mainstream intelligence of this country and any other Country who proclaims it's self "Christian".

Britain take note. If we went into another country and filed suit to stop any of their traditions, we would wind up either deported, in jail or dead. Lay down America, and roll over.

The united states was founded as a melting pot. People from all over were welcome, regardless of their race, color, creed, religion, culture, or beliefs. As long as people obey the law, I really don't care what "culture" they belong to.

Some of my favorite people in California are a Sikh family that owns an Indian restaurant. They like me so much they want me to marry into the family. (Given the girl they want me to marry is half my age, I politely declined.) They're good people, law abiding and productive members of the community, and they all are naturalized.

I welcome them. Oh, and originally they immigrated here illegally. In Fairbanks I was "adopted" by a Korean family. They were the landlords to the apartment building I lived in, and they LOVED the fact that I'd cook dinner for the grandma of the family.

They kept very traditional values, right down to the fairly confusing naming system, were all naturalized, and productive members of the community. I welcome them. In Seattle I had Shinto, Buddhist, Jewish, Hmong, Mormon, and all different flavors of Christian friends.

I greatly enjoyed the variety of people I grew up with, and honestly never really thought anything of it until I moved to less diverse areas. Good people are good people, it doesn't really matter what "culture" they are from. I find it strange that people reap the benefits of cultural diversity every day, but complain when that culture becomes "noticeable.

" Go to a store on x-mas in most major cities. What do you notice? Most of the staff are jewish or asian.

For them it is just December 25th. Didn't plan well enough for x-mas dinner? Good bet you can find a chinese restaurant that is open.

My recommendation? Treat people like people. If it is comfortable for YOU to say Merry X-mas, then say Merry X-mas.

The people that take offense at that are looking for offense, and will find it if you offer it or not. The cab driver is no different from pharmacists refusing to give out the Morning after pill. Do you really feel that people should be forced to do things they find morally repugnant?

I'm fairly certain the cab-driver would have been ok with calling taxi dispatch and asking for a driver who would be willing to transport the person..

A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
