I have no problem with women wearing burkas in public. They are not stupid. However the women who do so must be ready to accept that they look suspicious and will likely be treated with deep suspicion.
The same would be true of any American that for any reason, religious or not, was wearing an article of clothing that covered their face. In banks or other higher security areas of the public domain any person from any place on the planet, American or not, will always be met with suspicion if they wear clothing that covers their face. If I walked in to a bank with a hooded sweatshirt on with the hood up and a bandanna covering my face I would be greeted by security at the door and likely be asked to either remove the covering articles of clothing or be asked to leave.... the police might be called with no warning to me.
The religious freedom does not play a base role here. Yes people are free to practice any religion they want to here but no, banks and secure buildings and public areas like airports do not have to bend the rules of security to allow for the free expression of any persons religion. Quite simply the base issue here is the covering of the face nothing more.
Banks, airports, public domain areas etc etc are not infringing on the free practice of religion, they are looking for criminals and trying to sop them. Criminals often cover their faces to prevent their identity from being made known. Covering ones face for any reason in public will arouse suspicion and if done in a bank or airport will likely get the police or security involved.
This has nothing to do with religious freedom, it has everything to do with security and it is not even heightened security.. just regular "you cant cover you face at a bank or airport" security.
I voted this question interesting not because I love the question, I voted it interesting, because it is interesting to know ( amazed, that's the word ) that there are still people that can be very insensitive to others. I am thinking in these time and age people can let there feelings known and criticize others without being so rude and ignorant on sensitive issues like this one. Being ignorant of the facts does not erased the fact that your question is tactless.
Like @vichussmith said, do not assume that Mahalo has no muslim users or even if there are none I still refused to believe your insensibilities. I don't have any issues with people who wears different than what is considered normal. Muslim women are not stupid because they wear burkas, they wear it because it is their belief and they want to wear it.
FYI, first, not all muslim women wear burkas and not all muslim women are from Afghanistan, if you're missing that. Educate and straighten your facts first before blurting out comments of these kind. About walking around with their burkas, don't make it your problem, there are many faces to see around unless where you live, all women wear burkas, then complain.
I live in the middle east and chances are I have to go to a crowded market to see one or maybe two between two to three hours I am there. In banks or other places, that people becomes wary when they see women or others with faces covered, come on we have eyes, ears and most of all common sense to come to a conclusion if something is wrong. Even with all the advance technologies or warnings that exists, people sometimes miss what they are looking for.
Blaming it to women who wear burkas does not change anything.
You are assuming that you are asking this question to a community which does not sympathize, or even belong to, the Islamic faith. Why do you get to wear a hat? Why do you get to wear sneakers instead of wearing shoes all the time.In America, I believe we have the right to express ourselves freely.
As citizens, Muslim women are included in that. Even though Muslim women may not like to wear the burka and be oppressed by men, not all Muslim women think exactly alike, nor do all women see wearing a burka as a bad thing. I personally do not care what people wear on their heads or on their faces.
It does not affect my life in any way.
I might be willing to engage with these racist and bigoted questions if the Asker had the guts to own their own words by not hiding behind "Anonymous". But I guess it does show their level of intelligence when they can't even spell their own names.
Traditions for most people run deep, I know my Native American ancestors kept very deeply rooted traditions which were a significant part of who we were as a people & a Nation, when the White man came into our land & took over, Our lives as we knew them & the traditions of our culture were removed. Our people were not only divided & cast into lands where there could be no crops, no game or anything else we could use to survive, but because we looked different & dressed differently, the laws that were forced upon our people, we could not speak in our dialect, we had to speak english, we had to learn about the white mans religion, if we refused we would be put to death. As a result we have lost so much of who we are, our identity, our pride & our way of life, which people today are converting back to because they can now see how the Native American People had spiritual insight & knew how to live in harmony with our enviroment.
I say if these women dress differently than our society wishes, let them! Last I checked These United States of America is a free country, If these women choose to wear their traditional clothing in public they should be able to, If you were a Woman & were asked to undress & forced to walk around in public in the nude, how would you feel! Although these women are not being forced to walk around nude, to them going out in public with out their customary dress in a foreign land brings on the same feelings of discomfort & degredation.
Regardless of what anyone believes or how anyone feels, these women deserve to be proud of who they are & proud of the heritage they stem from and allowed to hang on to as much of their traditions, values & the culture of their people. I Love my Country, however I must say the white mans way has not always proven to be the right way to live, Since we as a Country have allowed anyone & everyone to bring their lifestyles, traditions, religions & languages into this Country, It's TOO DAM LATE, to stop them now! I am not racist nor prejudice, I am An American Indian Woman Who Embraces The Difference In All Of Us, If we were all the same, What a waste of mankind that would be......
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
