So many great ones........... I have always been a fan of his music, and there are so many that I really like: I think my favorite is "Runnin’ Down the Dream". I also love "You Wreck Me" and "A Mind With a Heart of It's Own"! Actually there’s not a bad one he has done in my opinion.

"Runnin’ Down the Dream" to me is a good song to hear in the car while driving as fast as I deem feasible! It can get rid of a lousy mood and make me feel good, or can make me feel even better if I am already in a good one! In 1998 I got the first brand new car I had ever had in about 30 years.

It was a Toyota Camry, and since I am old it was an exciting car to me :-). I remember that "Runnin’ Down the Dream" was on the radio as I left the dealer’s and tore down the road. I will always remember that feeling of freedom, and looking forward to a big turning point in my life in other aspects as well.

My Camry is still running strong. I have since gotten a Highlander, but the Camry is still in the family with over 300,000 miles on it! What a car!

I don’t think it will ever stop. The one repair that had to be done was that it needed a new key, as the key wore out! I can only hope that my Highlander lasts nearly as long, as my days of ever seeing a brand new car are over......... :-( At the rate it’s going, I have great hopes for it as well!

Thanks Tom Petty! You and John Mellencamp are my favorite driving buddies! Can't hear his voice that well, but that seemed to be true of the videos I found. Oh well, better than nothing :-) I love the song! .

American Girl Well she was an american girl Raised on promises She couldn't help thinkin that there Was a little more to life Somewhere else After all it was a great big world With lots of places to run to Yeah, and if she had to die Tryin she had one little promise She was gonna keep Oh yeah, all right Take it easy baby Make it last all night She was an american girl It was kind of cold that night She stood alone on her balcony She could the cars roll by Out on 441 Like waves crashin in the beach And for one desperate moment there He crept back in her memory God its so painful Something thats so close And still so far out of reach Oh yeah, all right Take it easy baby Make it last all night She was an american girl I love this song. It's so much more meloncholie than it's pace and pop would have you think at first listen. There's a lot of desire in the song, and I think there's even a little bit of jaded wishing for something more that you should have had a long time ago.

And knowing that there's more out there (because of couse there is for an American girl), you really want to go out there and chase it down, even if it hurts you, even if you don't quite reach it. I looked it up on songfacts.com: This song is the subject of an urban myth that reads as follows: The University of Florida is located in Petty's hometown of Gainesville, Florida. A dorm at the school, Beatty Towers, provided the backdrop to a popular urban legend at UF as well as the story behind this song.

The story was that there was this virginal, All-American, debutante sort of girl, blonde locks and all, who decided to take hallucinogens for the first time while in her room at Beatty Towers. This being the 1960's and the age of limitless possibilities, it was pretty common to do something like that, especially in a college setting. Apparently, the girl thought she could fly, so she exited through the window and arrived face first on the concrete below.

Some modern minstrels like to add that she jumped from the 13th floor, but this is probably part of campus lore. This incident was a big deal in Gainesville, which was still a picturesque Southern college town. It represented the end of innocence experienced by baby-boomers during the 1970's.

Using it as inspiration, Tom Petty wove a captivating and poignant song based on this story for his first album and the rest is history. Expanding on the concept of innocence lost, this song speaks volumes and resonates even today. Beatty Towers are by State Road 441, which is mentioned in the second verse.

(thanks, Pablo - Miami, FL) Petty: "I wrote that in a little apartment I had in Encino. It was right next to the freeway and the cars sometimes sounded like waves from the ocean, which is why there's the line about the waves crashing on the beach. The words just came tumbling out very quickly - and it was the start of writing about people who are longing for something else in life, something better than they have.

" Mike Campbell has been The Heartbreakers' guitarist since they formed the band. Here's what he told us about this: "We used to have people come up to us and tell us they thought it was about suicide because of the one line about 'if she had to die,' but what they didn't get was, the whole line is 'if she had to die trying. ' Some people take it literally and out of context.

To me it's just a really beautiful love song. It does have some Florida imagery. Free Fallin'" It's not that I think "Free Fallin'" is his greatest song (although I think it is one of his best); it's because it has personal connotations for me. When I was a teenager in the 1950s, I lived in the L.A. suburb of Reseda in the San Fernando Valley, as does the girl in the song: "It's a long day livin' in Reseda. There's a freeway runnin' through the yard .

. . " Tom used some "artistic license" here, however, as there are no parts of Reseda that have freeways running through them (the suburbs that do are located south of the city limits of Reseda) buy, hey--it makes for a better song!

In addition, I would often "move west down Ventura Boulevard" with my friends, so--all in all--the song brings back fond memories of better days and better times. I wouldn't live in the Reseda of today for love nor money, though; it has mostly become a sleazy, run-down "barrio". Old school While I like his newer stuff, I thought his older music was much more original. I'm not sure I can pick just one, but my two favorite songs are: Don't Do Me Like That and Don't Come Around Here No More. I have to say that Refugee and You Got Lucky are in that top list as well.

I just think these songs were so original when they were first released, but still stand up today. I think his voice showed more emotion (and comprehension! ) then.

A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
