Although the flags stand, silently across the stage from the American flag in many churhes, I never heard the pledge ... recited outside of Vacation Bible School. Vacation Bible School (normally called VBS) was an annual event that used to last two weeks. It consisted of 10 full length day and one abbreviated and specialized night session.
These sessions were held at the church Monday-Friday during the day during summer vacation. In most churches Vacation Bible school was a mixture of recreation, crafts, music, etc. Accompanied with the repetition of a very specialized assembly ritual and bible study. The abbreviated night session was a big finish attended by both children and parents.
This session show cased the children and what they’d done during the previous two weeks. The parents particapated in and got a chance to obvserve their children during a typical assembly session. After the assembly session the parents were then treated to something "performed" by each age group built around something they’d done or studied during the two weeks.
These presentations normally became less of a high point and less of a event the older the particular age group were. (As an aside, my wife and I on one occassion, did manage to bring down the house with an somewhat outrageous performed by multiple youth age participants where each each and every youth age participant was imersed totally in individual chartacter.) After the presentation, the parents would usually tour the "class rooms" for the different age groups and view the crafts and other items their children had created during the week. One of the special treats reserved for the the last big session was the children getting to take their creations home.
So for most it makes no sense to talk about these pledges in any context other than that of children at Vacation Bible school (VBS). I would expect variations in the words but the pledge to the Christian flag that I remember from my VBS experiences went like this: "I pledge allegiance to the Christian flag, and to the Savior for whose kingdom it stands, one brotherhood uniting all Christians in service and love. " The pledge to the Bible that I remember went like this: "I pledge allegiance to the Bible, God’s Holy Word, and will make it a light unto my feet, a light unto my path, and will hide its words in my heart that I may not sin against God.
" The standard pledge to the US flag was also recited. Each of the flags and the Bible used during the sessions was carried in and held by one of the children. To the children, getting to carry and hold one of these during an assembly was a really big event.
To the parents responsible for pulling this together each day, having a different child derforming each of these three tasks wach session was a really big event of a more different kind. For a child, being selected to do the carrying and holding during the big finish, evening session was even more huge. Although it can sound rigid, structured, unpleasant and boring; for most children it was anything but.
In fact most children that I knew managed to attend several different two week sessions in several different churches during a typical summer vacation. To put it into perspective, the most common and universial memory and image of VBS held by almost all participants both as children or as adults is cookies served with Koolaid. With an image like that, you can rest assured that while it had tremendous value it was seldomn if ever taken too seriously. I pledge allegiance to the Christian flag, and to the Savior, for which it stands, one brotherhood uniting all true Christians in fellowship and love. " I repeated this at the beginning of every Tae Kwon Do class for several years. And that is the only place I have ever heard it.It's been a few years since then, but I think I got it mostly right from memory.
My friend you have made a mistake in the wording of this question allow me to explain The Christ centered life is not just something one "recites" its rather something one lives. "IF" you Love me then keep my commandments John 14:15 not suggestions by the way also satan in James 2:19 is said to believe in God and trembles, its not enough to therefore just believe, but one must BE-LIVE, one must do more then "recite" one must live it so others can see Christ in you, then words won't be needed rather your ACTIONS will be all the "recite" you will ever need. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
