At what age should you start babies/toddlers out on solid food?

Current recomondations idicate that breast milk or formula should be a babys main source of food until 6 months of age.

There are so many theories and ideas about when to start a baby on solid foods that it is hard to know what is best and what to believe. Though many websites claim that a baby should begin solid foods between four and six months of age, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that you wait until at least six months. Babies are born with immature digestive systems and they cannot digest food at only four months old.

Wives tales about feeding young babies cereal to make them sleep through the night are not true and can actually be dangerous to a baby whose system cannot handle it. They need only breastmilk or formula until six months, at which point they can begin experimenting with small amounts of fruit or vegetable purees. A good resource is a book called Sprout Right by Lianne Phillipson-Webb, it is dedicated to this very topic and filled with good, healthy recipes for each stage of a child's development.

All the best. Enjoy this special time with your niece's daughter!
