Genre wise, you just play venues that suit the genre you play. If your a metal band, play bars that are known for attracting metal fans. If your an indie band, play in bars with a big indie scene etc. You can scope out venues by attending a gig and seeing what sort of crowd the place attracts, if you reckon your suited to it, talk to the management about playing one gig, this will usually be a trial gig upon which you build a residency on (a weekly spot).
You said you live in a place that is experiencing a Thrash Metal revival, so go to the venues this is happening in. My main piece of advice is to not change genres or style because you think it'll be easier to get gigs, it won't be and you'll never really put the full effort into playing songs you dislike which will get you no where. As for your question about originals, it's different for every band but most start off playing covers and develop their own material over time as they become more competent and confident playing with each other.
Finally, as far as pay is concerned, it's nothing to quit your day job over but does provide a bit of an extra income. You may get paid about $200 - 400 a night depending on the venue, which although sounds a lot has to be split by all members of the band, go towards band upkeep and factor into travel and transport costs. There's fewer full time cover bands then original bands around that actually make a living playing music.
Your best off playing for fun and if you make an extra few dollars a week then it's a bonus. Hope that helps.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
