There are 2 things to consider, the current temperature, and the current change in temperature. The temperature is determined by the amount of energy that is received by the earth, plus a little due to conduction from the earth's core, that is balanced by the amount of energy that is lost as earth radiates heat away from the earth. When those two are in balance, then earth's temperature is pretty stable.
At the moment, the sun isn't changing, so that's not part of the temperature change that's been observed. What has changed is the amount of energy that is radiated away from the earth. That has declined.
It has declined because of an increase in greenhouse gases. Atmospheric water is the most important greenhouse gas (GHG). CO2 is the next most important GHG.
The amount of CO2 in the atmosphere has increase 40% over the last century. That increase not only prevents some radiation from escaping, but also allows a bit more water to be in the atmosphere, so the effect of water is also increased. However, the earth is huge, If I gave you a big blowtorch and sent you down to Antarctica to melt some ice, after you'd been at it for a year or so, I would be able to fly over all of Antarctica and not notice any difference.
There would be a difference, but it would be small relative to the size of the continent. The increase in GHGs are kind of like that, except that they continue to work, virtually forever, until either there's a new balance, or something else changes. It's going to take many decades before the earth comes close to a new balance, even if we stop adding CO2 to the atmosphere completely, and that's not going to happen.
There are confusing climatic events, like el nino / la nina, and changes in the polar vortex and the warm water circulation in the world's oceans, that make some years warmer, or colder, in different places. However, the trend has been consistent for decades, and will continue to be so. There are longer term changes, that cause ice ages, but they will not affect the world's climate in the next several centuries.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
