Sinus infections are usually treated with antibiotics, since bacteria that invade the nasal passages cause the infection. These antibiotics include amoxicillin, Bactrim and Septra. Besides prescribed medications, over-the-counter medications are given for the pain associated with the condition.
These medications include Tylenol, Advil or Motrin. Nasal sprays and decongestants are also given to unclog nasal passages and drain mucus. Other treatments include rest, warm compresses and steaming the face.
Rest helps the body fight the infection. Applying a washcloth soaked in hot water on the cheeks, eyes and around the nose helps ease sinus pain. Steaming the sinuses by placing the face over a large bowl of hot water also eases sinus pain and drains mucus.
Adding about 10 to 15 drops of eucalyptus or peppermint essential oil to the bowl will also relieve congestion.
