Brown discolored water in the toilet bowl... what could this be?

After flushing several times, my toilet is refilling with brown discolored water. It does not smell, and it's not returning from the sewage hole.It is refilling from the top tank with brown water. I first though it might have been because they are flushing fire hydrants in my neighborhood, but no other faucets of mine are producing brown water, only the toilet (which would have the same water supply).

I've already googled "brown water toilet" - URL2 may be rust buildup iron or calcium, within the tank (clean water is filling the tank, and the tank is dirtying it) but you would think that it wouldn't appear so suddenly, it would be more gradual. You would also think a few flushes would rid the rust buildup. Any idea what this could be and why it isn't affecting my other sources of water?

Dirt is more visible in the toilet bowl because it's white porcelain, so you might be getting some silt deposits from the hydrant flushing. In any case, I don't think it's a major problem and would most likely cure itself in a few days..

First, ask your family members if any of them have started pooping in the tank! If not, then it is likely some sort of rusting or build-up in the plumbing directly to, or in, the tank!

If it's only in your toilet, then trace the lines - if they come from the same source as everything else in your home, ten it's either the lines to the tank, or the tank itself. Put a cup of bleach in the tank after your next flush and let it sit for about 8 hours to kill anything in there. Then flush and do it again.

See if that fixes your problem. Let us know! .

The first thing I would've said (if you hadn't mentioned otherwise) that someone has either flushed the main water line (under the street) or had fixed something that introduced the foreign substance into the lines (I'm quite familiar with THAT), but you said it's limited to just that particular toilet and nothing else. Since you seem to have some knowledge of what you're doing, do you have any way of directing the stream that goes into the toilet overflow pipe into a cup (just to test) to see if the water you're getting out of that feed line is dirty or not? 2 It sounds like they were working on the water/sewage lines in your area. Since you probably used the toilet first, all the dirty water headed to your toilet. It will clear up after several flushes.

I'd recommend letting the water run a little bit per each faucet just to clear out the lines. Especially in the kitchen.
