I know the quality is supposed to better for hardbacks, but the lesser price of paperbacks is quite attractive when one has a limited budget. But am I really 'shooting myself in the foot' if I want my books to last longer than I do, if I'm buying paperbacks? How long will paperbacks last anyhow?

There are more positive aspects to buying paperbacks over hardbacks Here are my reasons for choosing paperbacks over hardbacks:1-They are cheaper2-They are more comfortable to read3-You can fit a lot more of them on a shelf4-If you ever have to move, they weigh a whole lot less! (I should know-I just moved with my library, and it was a lot easier to move the paperbacks than the hardbacks) Sources: (opinion)-Buy the paperbacks.
Try the secondary market. I am slowly building a personal library so I tend to buy hardbacks whenever they are available. I do have some paperbacks that are at least thirty years old though and although they do show their age they are still holding together.
One good option that I have found is to but hardbacks from secondary sellers on Amazon. I have found these sellers to be reliable and the books that I have purchased in this manner have always arrived in the condition that they were advertised as being in. Often times you can find new books that have never been read in the secondary market and most of the time you can find those that are listed as?
Like new.? Usually these books run about a third of their original price and although you have to pay shipping you usually don? T have to face sales tax so it all evens out. I have used this method to replace several paperbacks that I bought when money was tight around here and have then given the paperbacks away, some of which went to Iraq for regimental libraries.
I hope that this helps.
Paperback vs Hardcover I myself buy hard cover only because I like to collect certain authors. But, if it's something I just want to read real quick and then pass it on to a friend I buy paper back. I have found that paper back books get yellow and terrible looking after about 5 years..
