They technically can be but it's not a good idea. I used to groom 3 medium sized mixed breed dogs that belonged to a nun and they were all declawed. The dogs all had several toes where a deformed nail would grow but I don't know if that's common or theirs just wasn't done well.

The nails that grew back were thin, twisted and sharp so if it was done to avoid scratching it had the opposite effect, it created tiny knives on their feet. It was really nasty looking and their feet just looked all weird and misshapen. They didn't seem to be pained or bothered by it though.

In all my years around dogs they were the only ones I have ever seen so it can't be very popular. I did a Google search to see if I could find something describing in detail how they did it and I couldn't but it is apparently very frowned upon in the vet community. Most of the results by vets said they would not do it and it can cause permanent constant pain when walking.

I don't think the dogs I knew had the whole end of their toes removed like cats do which could explain why some of the nails tried to grow back and they weren't in pain. If that's the case then partial removal isn't effective and complete removal is very cruel so you probably should be looking into alternatives, like training.

Declawing dogs Dogs and cats have different foot anatomy. Cats have sharp claws which they can retract. Dogs have duller claws which cannot retract.

And they walk on their nails so they need them for balance; cats retract their nails and walk on their pads. Even declawing cats is beginning to be thought of as cruel and most breeders will not allow their animals to be declawed-I just bought a cat and the no-declaw was in the contract and every breeder I talked to said the same thing, right up front--you cannot ever declaw this cat. (My current cat is declawed but I did not understand what it was--I thought they literally just took the nail--they cut off the whole first toe joint.

) Just to be sure, I did a brief search online and could not find any information on fully declawing a dog--just removing the dewclaw. You don't say why you want to declaw your dog. If he is scratching you, then bring him to a groomer and get his nails trimmed.

And bring him to obedience class and teach him not to jump on people.

Declawing removes the top digit of their finger. I will not do it to my cats again.

It is SO...............wrong in so many ways to do this to a cat....let alone a DOG. How would you like your nails ripped out of your hands? Did you know cats need their claws for balance?

Human Beings are so cruel.....There are times I am embarrassed to even be one. If your that concerned about your furniture, your rugs, whatever don't have a pet.....and for God's sake don't have kids..................they get into everything and chopping off a hand might sound like good thing to those evil enough to ever consider ripping claws out of a cat. It just makes me sick!

Cats and dogs. " "Other than dogs and cats, what animals do you feel make the best pets? " "If domestic cats were the size of a German Sheppard, would you have one?

And would you have it declawed? " "I know that dogs are loyal pets to have, but what about cats? Can't cats be loyal to their owners too?
