The annual pap smear is designed to detect abnormalities of the cervix, such as pre-malignant or malignant cells that could result in cervical cancer in women. The pap smear does not have a 100 percent accuracy rate, however, it still remains one of the most important parts of a woman’s annual physical. Generally, women should start scheduling their annual pap smears once they turn either 21 years old or begin being sexually active, whichever occurs first.
Even though, pap smears are not very successful in detecting different sexually transmitted diseases, they can detect changes on the cervix that have been effected by an STD, such as HPV, otherwise known as the human papilloma virus. The pap smear test can also detect certain infections of the cervix or endometrium.
