Leopards (Panthera pardus) are known to be a highly adaptable species, being very tolerant of different habitat types and opportunistic in their hunting behavior. In addition, they are expert tree-climbers, swift runners, and are secretive and stealthy. These characteristics have enabled their success and wide distribution (Africa and Asia), as explained by wild cat conservationists (Panthera, Inc.).
Despite the success enjoyed by leopards, they are now very much threatened by habitat loss and diminishing food supply associated with human activities, and increasingly are forced to share their home range with humans. Nowhere is this more evident than on the Indonesian island of Java, the home of the endangered Javan leopard (Panthera pardus melas). Distribution of Leopards in Java Leopards were once widespread across Java, inhabiting a variety of ecosystem types and exhibiting more versatility than the Javan tiger which became extinct in the 1970s (World Wildlife Fund).
