It's a very old original oil painting with only the word "Suwat" on the lower left. The painting, listed on tinypic as "Suwat Painting" for viewing (I have the url but as you know, Askville does not permit the posting of websites folks! ), depicts a scene that still exists today at the Suwat waterfall in Thailand, with the exception that a hut on the right side of the calm water farther away from the waterfall (in the painting) is now decaying in real life and surrounded by water.

The masking tape on the back of the painting is at least 50 years old. It has been painted with brush and palatte knife. Old original oil painting with only the word "Suwat" on the lower left The Bank of Thailand commenced operation on December 10, 1942 at the time when the Second World War had already broken out. In wartime that extended to almost a year, it was not the time to fully appreciate art of any form. Uncertainty over the security of life and property had spread through the nation disheartening everyone including the staff of the Bank of Thailand.

It was thus not an opportune time to search for works of art. Moreover, the Bank did not at that time possess an office building of its own but was using a building that belonged to the British which must be returned once the war ended. As the war was coming to an end, the Bank of Thailand faced the need to relocate to a permanent workplace.

However, the Bank could not yet afford to purchase any land and building. The Bank therefore requested permission from the Treasury Department of the Ministry of Finance to relocate to the compound of the Bangkhunprom Palace, which was then unoccupied, on the renting basis. The Bank moved its operations to the Palace in early 1945 and thereafter the organization gradually grew.

The need to acquire actual ownership of the workplace arose when the Government informed the Bank that it wanted to use the Palace for civil operation. So the Bank initiated the purchase of the Mananga-Sila Mansion from the Treasury Department in exchange for the Bangkhunprom Palace and its compound which the Bank wanted to retain. Consequently, since June 7, 1961, the Palace came into the Bank's possession.

The main building of the Bangkhunprom Palace was superbly designed in Renaissance and Art Nouveau architectural style. The exquisite plaster mould of Renaissance and Rococo style and the elegant woodworks in Art Nouveau are renowned for their ineffable magnificence. The majestic beauty of the building may indeed need no further decoration of extra art objects.

Besides, in its early operation, the Bank of Thailand, as the central bank of the country, was running a tight monetary policy to curb the inflationary pressure that resulted from the wartime spending of the Thai government and the Japanese army. The financial situation of the country at the time rendered unnecessary the redecoration of the Palace. Such period went by fast and it appeared as though the staff of the Bank had forgotten all about artworks.

Some are famous some never became known whether they were talented by your estimation or not - I can't know, I haven't seen the image.
