On July 7th, 1964 the Oklahoma City arrived at Yokosuka, Japan. There she relieve the U.S.S. Providence as the Flagship of the 7th Fleet. Her first cruise as flagship was to take Vice Admiral Roy E.
Johnson, 7th Fleet Commander to South Vietnam and up the river Siagon for a three-day goodwill visit. She returned to Yokosuka until early August, 1964. In June 1965, Oklahoma City began naval gunfire support missions along the South Vietnamese coast (and was featured on the 6-August-1965 cover of Life Magazine.) As hostilities increased, she spent more time in the Vietnam Combat Zone, and participated in operations Double Eagle; Piranha; Deckhouse IV; and Hastings II.
She participated in Operation “Frequent Wind” evacuating 150 fleeing Vietnamese when Saigon fell in late April, 1975. During the entire Vietman war, she never returned to the US.
