Certain foods, like ergot - but they've mostly been taken out of circulation. (Apart from some mushrooms, of course). There's a fungus called ergot that forms on wheat that's been badly stored, and ingesting that will cause psychosis and even death (it was responsible for the 'death of the first-born son' in the plagues of Egypt); and there are crazy mushrooms and nasty things like the fugu-fish, but it's highly unlikely that anything that's gone off in the ordinary domestic fridge will lead to psychosis. It could, of course, lead to a huge domestic row, and don't invite Gordon Ramsay round, but nothing worse.
It's linked, but it can't cause it by itself It's a very complicated question. The shortest answer is, "No, 'bad food' can't cause psychosis all by itself. There have to be other pre-existing conditions, either genetic or environmental."
However, the state of your nutrition is closely linked to your mental state. Bad nutrition will make it harder for your brain to function properly. Bad nutrition will interfere with sleep, exacerbating other problems. It can also lead to poor metabolism, making you feel generally bad and again making other problems worse.
This applies to all sorts of mental disorders, not just psychosis, though I suspect you're using the term in its non-clinical sense. Depression, for example, is much more common than psychosis, and the links between depression and poor nutrition are well known. It's made worse by the fact that having depression makes it harder to motivate yourself to eat properly. There's no specific "bad food" that touches off particular disorders, but keeping your body in shape is definitely good for your mind.
If you've been diagnosed with a mental disorder, or suspect that you have one, improving your nutrition is a good plan. Getting in shape through exercise is the flip side, and it's also important. But it's no replacement for getting proper treatment.
The causes of psychological disorders are mysterious and numerous, ranging from genetic abnormalities to the way you grew up. Even good nutrition is no substitute for counseling, medications, or other therapies. Good nutrition and proper exercise are good advise no matter what mental state you're in.
If you're having a problem you need to see a doctor..
Yes anything from massive allergic reactions to toxins found in some aging foods (such as rye flour) can precipitate a psychotic break. This can be temporary or permanent depending on the substance and the degree of the reaction. One of the most famous cases involves the probability of this type of reaction in the girls who were participants in the Salem witch trials.
Their 'fits' have been studied historically and possibly traced back to mold found in the rye flour being used in one house. I am not sure how accurate this report is, but it does point to the possibility of this kind of thing happening. Some substances to seem to cause permanent damage, but if you are not killed by whatever it was, recovery within days or weeks is normal..
I'm fresh from Psychology baking oven but never heard of FOOD causing Psychosis... Even did a little research on the net but never even occurred to me that bad food can cause psychosis... unless there is some kind of DRUG as ingredient in the food... In 1994 DSM-IV-TR described more precisely what psychosis really represents, how it may occurs and what could cause it. Since psychosis is a generic psychiatric term for a mental state often described as involving a "loss of contact with reality" there are few things that cause this. Usually it's some disorder like schizophrenia, delusion, sleep deprivation, manic depression, psychosocial stress but also it can be substance induced psychosis (that's where food might pop out as cause for psychosis).
Now, when we say "food" we might think about ALL the things that we insert in our body thru the mouth. It's well known that alcohol consummation causes psychosis as well as some pharmacy drugs like dextromethorphan, antihistamines at high doses, cold medications containing phenylpropanolamine) as well as some prescription drugs. It's also well known that all STIMULANTS like cocaine, LSD, cannabis causes psychosis.
Alcohol tend not to cause psychosis while consummation but withdrawal from alcohol can be particularly dangerous, leading to psychosis or delirium and other, potentially lethal, withdrawal effects.
Dairy and gluten grains can cause celiac which can cause pychosis. Not eating these foods heals the body and mind.. Mental health issues- depression etc may come from it. Dairy made me so depressed no medicine could work.
I take vitamins and heal. If you want a list of the vitamins, let me know. Fish oil, evening primrose oil, leicithin, krill oil, phosphatidyl serine/DMAE, biotin, coenzyme Q10, zinc, rhodiola, Vit A, Vit D3 etc are some of them.
I can explain more if you want. Best wishes.
