You cannot perform a 'clean install' from ANY 'upgrade media' To do a 'clean install' means to install an operating system on a freshly formatted, clean disk drive. Where as using upgrade media will do just that, 'upgrade' from one version of an ALREADY installed O/S (Operating System) to a later version. (By changing some files, not deleting the O/S) Windows 7 can normally be installed as an upgrade if the computer in question has already has Windows Vista installed (and in your case the 'HP upgrade media' is to upgrade to 'Windows 7') Computers running Windows XP cannot normally be upgraded but would require a full (fresh) install. So you can check your existing system Microsoft have developed a small down-loadable utility.
