According to the article above when you cancel your Yahoo Plus account it is converted to a free Yahoo account.
It doesn't mention anything about deleting your emails or contacts during this conversion process. I think that would only happen if you close this account. You say you don't trust the advice in Yahoo Help so I don't know what more I can say other than contact Yahoo Customer Care by phone and ask them.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
