You could but there would be no real benefit You could technically do this. However, soapstone is the best material when it comes to retaining heat. It is better just to build a huge fire and get the stone itself hot.
Then, close the flue to keep out any drafts. The stone should then be able to keep the room warm. It would be a waste of time, money, and effort to put the exchanger on.
