A friend suggested that we go biking in some trails in the pennines, but I wouldn't last very long with my Dawes discovery 201. I was wondering if I could change my 700c tires to a thicker mountain bike tire to help me in the mud? Would it make much difference, or is it a waste of time?

Your rims will take them, but maybe not your frame In one way you're in luck, as the MTB wheel size known as 29" uses the same 622 mm rims as your current 700C tires does. But before going on a shopping spree you need to check your bike for clearance. Usually the tight spot is between the chain stays, up against the crank, but have a good look everywhere your wheel passes in close proximity to the frame, forks and brakes - then go shopping for 29er tires.Be aware that there are recommendations as to how wide a tire should be WRT the width of the rim.
See link: sheldonbrown. Com/tire-sizing. Html Another option is to look for CX (cyclocross) tires.
They too will fit your rims, and are available in nice and knobbly designs. They will probably be a tad wider than what you have now, but not enough to interfere with your frame. How much difference it'll make is hard to tell, as it is highly dependent on the riding conditions you are going to encounter.
If the ground is dry and firm pretty much anything goes. For mud there are two options that both can be successful: 1) use a wide tire and stay on top 2) use a narrow tire to cut through to something more solid below Whatever you do, make sure to get the tire pressure up to the recommended value. It'll make your bike roll easier and help prevent "snakebite" punctures.
