Most parents want to spend the night in the hospital with their young child. This is often best for everyone. But make sure you get an early start on this; overnight spots for parents are often limited and fill up quickly.
Well ahead of check-in, ask what accommodations the hospital has, whether one or both parents may stay, and what to bring along. Comfort varies. In certain hospitals, “overnight accommodations” might be a vinyl armchair.
In others, you’ll have a relatively comfortable place to bed down. But even if your back doesn’t love sleeping on a rollaway bed, pullout couch, or reclining chair, remember that your child will feel safer and more secure with you right there. And you can remind him of your selflessness decades from now when he fusses about taking two hours out of his day to drive you to the doctor.
