Most women do not want to take any medications during pregnancy. However, most women do use medications at some point during pregnancy. A survey of 578 women in the United States found that most of them used prescription, over-the-counter, or nutritional therapies, not including prenatal vitamins, minerals, or iron: 93% of women self-medicated with at least one over-the-counter medication, and 21% used five or more over-the-counter medications during pregnancy.
60% used a prescription medication. The most commonly used prescriptions were antibiotics, respiratory drugs, medications for stomach ailments, and narcotics. 45% of the women in the survey used an herbal product.
