I view "music" as any sonic expression (ie sound art), so to me, there is no requirements for music, other than that it be an expression, and through the medium of sound. For example, the band Chord writes 10-15 minute songs made up entirely from the notes that make up a single chord throughout, spread cross the different guitarists of the group. I find it to be quite expressive, and so, despite a lack of melody, I most definitely consider it music.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MzgOQRMqX... Another way to think about it: a drummer plays a single drum. Since there is no change in pitch, there is no melody. Is that to say that it isn't music?
Yes, to me music is an art medium using sound. Some of the characteristics of music can include pitch (which governs melody and harmony), rhythm, dynamics, and the sonic qualities of timbre and texture. These are possible characteristics but are not required.
So, melody can be a characteristic of music but is not a requirement. The sound of a jack hammer could be considered music if there is someone there to appreciate it as art. Saying music requires melody is like saying that drawing can only be done with acrylic paints.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
