Can my employer force me to pay for gas used during business travel in a company-owned car?

I work for a small computer company running field service calls. I have traditionally driven my personal vehicle and been paid mileage, however they have asked me to begin driving a company car for which they pay maintenance and insurance. However, I was told they expect me to pay for the gas used during business travel.

Is this legal? I wouldn't think so, but I've been searching Google this afternoon for relevant info and so far haven't found anything. Thanks for any help you can provide.

It does not sound like it so long as you keep track of receipts and miles, they should pay. Keep all receipts, and at the very least, you will then get a tax deduction at the end of the year, but I am sure this sounds fishy. I mean, they would usually give you a mileage allowance.

Why not just pay the gas bill. Of course, if you have a corporate credit card, then this would be a total non-issue. Best of luck!.

If you are working for them, they have to pay for the gas. They would pay for the gas directly, though, not using the IRS mileage allowance. You should be expensing the gas receipts..

It sounds like their compromise between company and personal car. Because you can obviously take this company car on slight detours for personal reasons. Since the gas is the least expensive cost of a car (well below insurance and maintenance), they chose that to balance the equation.

And they're saving money on filing your expense reports. Can they do this? Yes.

Must you go along with this? You can ask the boss whether you can use your car and continue to file the mileage reimbursement forms. He might say yes..

1 Of course it's legal. Why not, it's a business agreement. You don't like, negotiate a better deal, or quit.

Employers have a very broad right to determine work arrangements. And thanks to the demise of trade unionism in America, they get away with it. Sorry.

2 Seems like a fair deal to me. Your car doesn't get the wear & tear whilst you travel for them. And, instead of searching Google or posting here, you might consider going ABOVE & BEYOND whilst at work to create job security. In this economy, tis better to be employed than not.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
