Can Pro Tools LE be ran off of an external drive instead of an internal drive?

While I have never used this software myself, I would imagine it is possible. An external hard drive is just an internal hard drive that sometimes isn't there. Just try it out in stages, making sure you can go back from whatever changes you have made so far.So with that in mind try this process: 1.

Create a copy of the pro tools le folder from your program files, with everything in it of course, and just add something like "_backup" to the folder name to make it easy to recognise and to change back. This should ensure you can go back to your original set up, but its not risk free, you could always try making a restore point on your machine.2. Copy the folder you just duplicated onto your external hard drive and then try running the program from there.

If it works, then great, try deleting the folder from your original hard drive (not the backup). If it still works then it should be fine, congratulations you now have it working on your external hard drive. If not then there is likely registry information pointing to the location on your internal which doesn't line up any more.

2a. If this happens then you will need to install the program directly onto the external hard drive (unless you are confident editing the registry). To do this you need to first uninstall the program.

This part is the most risky for losing your application settings. Many uninstalls like to give you the option of keeping any settings you may have, but if they don't you will need to find them and back them up before you install. These could be in the "Documents and Settings" in C drive, in which case make a copy of them, they could be in the registry, in which case export them to a file if you know how, or they could be in the program folder, in which case your backup will hold all the settings for you.

Once you have uninstalled just reinstall it onto the external. If your settings are no longer intact then copy any settings you backed up back to where they belong and cross your fingers. At the end of the day they are just settings though. 3.

If this has worked so far then you should try plugging it into one of your other computers and running it again. Chances are it won't work. If it does then basically you are done.

It probably won't carry your settings across, they will probably be stored locally. Follow the same procedure to find any settings from part 2a but this time copy them to the new computer. They won't all sync up but they will at least be consistent for now.3a.

So if running straight away from the external hard drive doesn't work on other computers, then install the program on these computers. To do this the best way would probably be to rename the program folder for the copy you have made then install it to the original folder name on the external hard drive. Once installation has completed delete this folder and then rename the original back to what it was. Copy any settings across as previously described and hopefully... hopefully it should be working URL4 may be useful to run the program at each step along the way to determine where it starts to work, and maybe where it stops, just in case something like using back up settings doesn't work.4.

Plug the external back into the original PC and see if it works. If it does, congrats! Now repeat the process you used to get it working for each of your other computers you want it on.

Hopefully it goes well for you.

This question is a two-fold question. Q1: Can you run Pro Tools off an external hard-drive? A1: Yes.

However you will be required to have an operating system on the same external hard-drive, booting off that drive and allow Pro Tools access to all its resources. To this, it would be just as easy to run multiple partitions on the internal hard-drive. Or Q2: Can you run Pro Tools sessions off an external hard-drive?

A2: Yes. If you leave Pro Tools installed on the internal hard-drive, you can simply use an external hard drive as you session drive. Simply creating a session on the external drive will access that drive as the main audio drive.

Note: drive directories can be changed at anytime from within each session. Phil Sawyers www.bootlegrecordingservices.com.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
