What will get your price up for laptops are accidental damage plans and extended warranties. That can take your $650 starter price to up near 1000 when you add multi-year coverage.

I'm a big fan of the Thinkpad series, and a used T4x/X40 would suit I like the Lenovo Thinkpad series of laptops because they're reliable and near indestructible. I like the X-series because it's ultraportable. I have an X40 and carry it with me almost everywhere. It's been dropped a few times but has taken the beating and still works perfectly.

The storage capacity will be smaller and run more expensive with an ultraportable- the X40, for example, only supports up to a 60 gig hard drive. The T-series has a lot of power, and a new T60 would run just over your $1000 budget, but an older T40, T41, T42 or T43 should come in under budget and still have several years of useful life in them. Most will come with a 40 or 60 gig hard drive, but can be upgraded to 120 gig for around $100.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
