One uses potatoes, the other one pumpkin and even if maybe flower, egg and salt/sugar might be considered a common ingredient with pies, there are still different spices to be used. Always follow the recipe exactly! Since pies are a very traditional food, a traditional main course would be ideal to serve before you serve the pie, but having said that, I think whatever the main course is, a well made sweet potato or pumpkin pie will always delight as a dessert!
