Mass market are the "normal" sized paperback book. Trade paperbacks are usually much taller and wider, and are considered "superior" to the mass market. Trade paperbacks are often made available AFTER the hardback version has been out but BEFORE the lower priced mass market.

I guess trade paperbacks get their name because for people interested in collecting books the trade paperback with its higher quality and smaller runs are more collectible/valuable. Firstly because they’ll last longer and probably be more attractive and because simple laws of supply and demand dictate that the smaller the supply the more valuable the item.
