Canon 500D or Nikon D5000, which one is better?

The Nikon D5000 only has a 2.7"" screen with 230,000 dots. In short, the Canon 500D's LCD is sharper and more colorful. Lastly, the Canon 500D can autofocus while capturing video using the Video option.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
