Location of the school? A big city offers better opportunities for real world experience. But, big cities are awful places to be a student in compared to a rustic, campus town.

Prior experience of the faculty? Have they actually practiced the subjects that they teach? Sadly, or maybe not, ranking and rating first tier law schools is a lot like trying to pick the best football teams in the N.C.A.A.Before the current system.

That is, does the school draw the bulk of its students from out of state and anticipate that the majority of its graduates will go out of state after graduation.

So many law schools will try to build up the school in a given area such as tax law, litigation, securities work, etc.Under this criterion, a law school might produce miserable divorce lawyers because it doesn’t emphasize those areas of law, but wonderful antitrust lawyers. Which school is better? It depends on whether you want a divorce lawyer or an antitrust lawyer.

Personally, I think that trying figure out which of the top tier schools is a waste of time, because they are all better than other higher ranking schools in some areas and worse in others. Of course, I can’t think of anyone who disgraced himself and the law that badly who graduated from most other law schools.
