Computer with Windows XP does not shut down properly?

Computer with Windows XP does not shut down properly! Computer with Windows XP does not shut down properly! This started two days ago, when I shut down the computer at night, I click on "Turn Off" and the shutdown starts normally, but when the monitor turns off, the computer is still on, and then reboots?

The only way to really shut down the system is, as the monitor goes off to then toggle the power strip off! I have run PC Pitstop Optimize 3, PC Pitstop Exterminator, JV16PT, and they all report not problems. Any suggestions?

Not sure exactly what is going on, but you may want to reinstall You may want to reinstall windows xp if you have the xp disc or a recovery disk. Make sure that you have everything backed up before you do this because it will erase everything. Once you install windows make sure to reinstall all of the updates, it may take a while, but to be safe you really need to..

2 I have seen this happen when a process is hung. It could be a virus, as Newf suggests, but it can also be something less insidious that's just causing a problem. Start the computer in safe mode (Hold down F8 while powering up and select it).

Then see if it powers down on demand. If it acts the same, you may have a power problem (ACPI) in hardware. If it shuts down nomally, then something running on your computer is preventing an orderly shutdown.

Hold down the power button until the computer switches off. That will at least give you a way to power down somewhat gracefully while you figure out what's wrong.

3 Quickest way is to do a system restore and see if that works.

4 Try this first...Right-click on My Computer, click Properties, click the Advanced tab. Under “Startup & Recovery,” click Settings. Under “System Failure,” uncheck the box in front of “Automatically restart.”

Also if have Roxio software (like my Dell did ) remove it, it is known to do stuff like that. Do you have SP3? If so, try uninstalling it; it will roll you back to SP2.

Solves a lot of problems. Sometimes I will remove a lot of stuff in msconfig as far as unnecessary services and programs. Thats always a help anyway.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
