As I told you last time, in fact many Republicans are gay, there is a long standing nickname - Log Cabin Republicans. The main reason gays have had so many policy successes lately isn't because Democrats changed, it's because Republicans are increasingly dropping their opposition and even becoming outright supportive.

For example, I live in Maryland. In 2012 we had a referendum on gay marriage. Most of the districts that went for Mitt Romney ALSO voted in favor of gay marriage.
