Continued... Here 's ivy! —take them, as I used to do Thy fowers, and keep them where they shall not pine. Instruct thine eyes to keep their colors true, And tell thy soul their roots are left in mine.
" So very little to be found about this sonnet as far as analysis goes, so I'll give you my interpretation. Sometimes when you try to interpret poetry you have to think a bit backwards. You sometimes need to read more than a few lines before the real idea hits you :) In this case the clue phrase is " in the like of that love of ours " If you're quick you can pick up the emotion in the lines " they grew in this close room, nor missed the sun and showers " 1.
Yes she likes to receive the flowers - love of ours, grew in this close room She compares the flowers to their love - in the like name 2. She compares flowers and plants to emotions and feelings. His flowers are full of living and sunlight and showers.
Hers she feels are harsh, a rose with horns, a vine that clings. She feels she " withdrew from my heart's ground " ( his love and affection ). She knows her thoughts have been full of " bitter weeds and rue " and she needs him to keep what she can give and " tell their soul their roots are left in mine " to " keep their colours true ".
She needs his love, she feels bitter without him and could have hurt his feelings - his flowers are sunlight and all she feels is she gives bitterness but believe deep down ( " roots" ) she loves him. 3. See above, she feels she has hurt him, she has been bitter and please forgive me, know deep down I love you and believe in you/us.
The imagery is in the flowers, they reflect her thoughts. 4. Again, see above, take only what she gives, it pales into insignificance compared to his flowers but she needs him and feels dark and bitter without him.
Notes eglantine - is a rose variety her heart is " overgrown with bitter weeds and rue " but don't forget to show her love and devotion to her husband " and await thy weeding " she made a mistake " I withdrew from my heart's ground " she loves him " their roots are left in mine " I've been studying poetry for a long time...this is a beautiful sonnet and I do feel I've given a correct and well supported answer. PS - poetry is cool. Don't ever forget that every song you love is a poem set to music :).
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
