The United States and China have the highest reported incidence of depression. The United States and China have the highest reported incidence of depression. However, this statistic can be misleading.

The United States and China also probably has the most resources to treat depression. It is not taboo in the U. S to seek therapy over depression symptoms, therefore many more people here are willing to seek treatment.

Some Third World countries report a very low incidence of depression, but that may be because they feel ashamed to seek treatment there. Sources: wrongdiagnosis.com/d/depression/stats-co... .

The most depressed countries are USA, Ukraine, France, Netherlands, Colombia, Lebanon..more. World's Most Depressed CountriesAuthor: Sonja DuporToday I stumbled upon an article published in Forbes Magazine. The article reported on a study conducted by the WHO and Harvard Medical School in 2004.

The researchers compared the rates of depression and anxiety disorders in 14 countries, including South American, Asian and one Middle Eastern country. The results may be surprising to some people who believe the most poorly developed countries have the highest levels of depression. But then maybe not.

I, for one, take these results with a bit of grain of salt since it is not clear how stigmatized mental health disorders are in every country. We also can't know how underreported instances of depression and/or anxiety really are due to a lack of health coverage and many other factors. Here are the rates of depression by population in descending order.

For some countries, the rate of anxiety disorders was also noted and this percentage, where available can be found in the table below.NB. I'm not entirely sure why Beijing and Shanghai, two cities, were grouped in here as countries. There was no statistic, at least not that I saw, on the rate of depression in China as a whole.

Though Canada was not included in the study, I nevertheless wanted to know the rate of depression and anxiety disorders since I live here. According to A Report on Mental Illnesses in Canada, the rate of anxiety disorders is 12%. The report also states that "twenty percent of Canadians will personally experience a mental illness during their lifetime."
