I need to detect a spot of (potential) malingering ... can anybody help with descriptions of what cracked ribs feel like, what the treatment was, how much you were out of action, how long you were out of action, what you could and couldn't do ... any and all of the above. Many thanks,Valerie. Asked by EnglishLady 36 months ago Similar questions: Cracked ribs long heal action Health.

Ouch! I was in an accident last June that totaled our motor home. I came away with two cracked ribs.
There's really not a lot the doctor can do for it. I was given a prescription for prednisone to cut down on the inflammation and a prescription for pain pills when I over extended myself and couldn't sleep. The doctor told me to keep a pillow with me to hug if I sneezed or coughed.
He also suggested that I hug the pillow and take several very deep breaths several times a day. The pain can be so severe that you tend to not breathe deeply and he explained that shallow breathing can lead to pneumonia. Thus his recommendation to deliberately expand my lungs as often as possible.
Other things that caused pretty severe pain were lifting and twisting (as in reaching across my body). It took about a week for the worst part of the pain to subside. A month later I wasn't aware of any discomfort connected with the injury.
Good luck with this. From your question, it seems that you are not the person with the injury. I hope this is true.
Have a very happy holiday. Sources: personal experience .
Very painful-takes about 6 weeks to heal-taking deep breathes are important-no treatment .
1 I cracked three ribs a couple of years ago. It hurt. It hurt a lot.It was like a bad bruise combined with a badly sprained muscle for a couple of days.
After that, it hurt, but not so much. I couldn't do heavy lifting very well, and movement became more delicate, for lack of a better descriptor, to compensate and protect my side, but I wasn't 'out of action'. I was still a mom with a little one.
Still had a house to maintain. Still had to run to the job site every day with little one in tow. Perhaps because I'm not in a position to be out of action, I just pushed through the discomfort.
I have known others who had cracked ribs. They weren't out of action either. Everyone has a different pain threshold, so everyone is different.
If the ribs had compound fractures, that would be a bit different, but cracked doesn't prevent moving around.

2 Whatever you do don't laugh, sneeze or ... well you know. Keep a small pillow handy so that if you do have to do one of those things gently press the pillow against the ribs. Once upon a time they used to tape you up if you broke a rib.
Not anymore, it's a pillow they suggest. Mamasu is correct when she says everyone is different. Different pain thresholds, different healing rates. My ribs didn't put me out of action either I just learned how to compensate with the pain.
Merry Christmas English Lady. Be well and stay well.

3 The people I have known with cracked ribs, one from a fall, and the other from a fender-bender. Both suffered for months and were limited in reaching, lifting. They would think they were well, and they were not--episodes of terrible pain.
One was male, other female, both middle-aged. Good luck, because this is going to be tricky to gauge.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
